CordBase vs YAGPDB, BotGhost and other custom-command builders
Written by the CordBase team. Competitor prices and features checked against their own sites; see sources below.
The short answer
YAGPDB, BotGhost and Bot Designer for Discord can store data, and in skilled hands they can build almost anything, including things CordBase can't. The cost is writing and maintaining the logic yourself (Go templates on YAGPDB, a visual builder on BotGhost). CordBase does one thing: you define a table and it generates the commands, with no code. Carl-bot tags, a common suggestion, can't store data at all.
| What you need | CordBase | YAGPDB custom commands | BotGhost | Carl-bot tags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How you build it | Define columns on the web | Write Go templates | Visual builder, custom variables | Tag scripting |
| Stores data between uses | Yes, rows per table | Yes, a key-value database | Yes, custom variables | No |
| Commands generated for you | Yes: add, query, view, update, delete, leaderboard | No, you write each one | No, you build each one | No |
| Limits on free plan | 2 tables, 100 rows each | 100 custom commands; entries up to 50 x member count | 8 custom slash commands | 1 command block per tag |
What the builders do well
They're general-purpose. YAGPDB's custom commands include a real database: on the free tier you get up to 50 entries per server member, 10 database calls per command run and 100 custom commands, and Premium raises those limits (YAGPDB database docs, YAGPDB Premium). BotGhost lets you build a bot visually and store stats in custom variables; the free plan includes 8 custom slash commands, and paid plans start at $5 a month billed annually (BotGhost). Bot Designer for Discord gives free users 100 variables (BDFD wiki).
If you want behavior CordBase doesn't have (automatic triggers on messages, custom responses, game logic), these are the right tools.
The cost of flexibility
Each command is yours to write, test and fix. An inventory system on YAGPDB means scripting the add, remove, lookup and listing commands, deciding how to store each item, and handling bad input. That's a good weekend for someone who enjoys it and a wall for everyone else. It also tends to live in one admin's head.
Carl-bot is great for reaction roles and automod, but its own docs say tags "cannot save data between invocations. There is no database you can read from or write to" (Carl-bot docs).
What CordBase does instead
You describe the data, not the commands. A table with item, quantity, owner and rarity columns becomes /inventory add, query, view, update (with increment and decrement for numbers), delete and leaderboard, with Discord's member picker and choice menus where the column types call for them. Role permissions, a web table of your data, and CSV/JSON export (Pro) come with it.
The limit is that you can't change what the commands do. There are no custom responses, triggers or scripts.
Choose Custom-command builders if
- You need behavior beyond storing and looking up records.
- Someone on your team enjoys scripting and will maintain it.
- You want everything in one bot you fully control.
Choose CordBase if
- You want structured records without writing code.
- Several people need to manage the setup, not one scripter.
- You want a web view and export of the data.
Questions
Can Carl-bot store data?
Not in tags. Carl-bot's documentation says tags can't save data between uses and have no database.
Does YAGPDB have a database?
Yes. YAGPDB custom commands can read and write a key-value database, with limits that scale with your member count and go up on Premium. You write the logic in Go templates.
Is there a no-code alternative to custom-command bots for tracking data?
CordBase is one: you define a table's columns on the web and it generates the slash commands for adding, searching, updating and ranking rows.
